Flexibility is not one of my personal strengths. I have tried a few yoga classes at the gym and I felt like the only thing that got a workout was my mind, racing between thoughts like “Why do I look so awkward right now?” and “I think I am the worst person who has ever attempted yoga.” I left those workouts feeling more stressed and inadequate than I did when I walked in.
So when everyone encouraged me to try a hot yoga class at an actual yoga studio, you can imagine my hesitation. I’ve of course heard of the many benefits of yoga for the body and mind so I decided to give it one more try.
What a difference! If you have only tried a yoga class at the gym, please go check out a yoga studio. The atmosphere is so much better, the teachers are knowledgeable and the heat relaxes your whole body. I learned a few things with my first hot yoga experience that I wanted to share with you so that you can get the most out of your first class.
You will get used to the heat. Most people spend their lives avoiding sweat, wearing extra strength deodorant and even getting medical treatments to limit sweating. When the sweat first starts pouring, it feels so unnatural. The first ten minutes are pretty uncomfortable as your body adjusts to working out in the heat. After that your body starts to really loosen up and by the time the class is over, you feel like a new person! Definitely make sure you bring some water to sip throughout the class. I tried to just chug some water and wound up with a stomachache. Also if you need to be somewhere right after class, I would recommend a change of clothes and some makeup wipes because you will be very sweaty!
Your teacher is on your team. Yoga can be intimidating, but your teacher is not! When they are walking around or looking your direction, it can feel like they are judging you, but I promise you they aren’t. Your teacher wants you to be successful and is your best resource and encourager. Also if you ever feel like your body needs a break, it is completely acceptable to pop into Child’s Pose for a breather. Most fitness classes try to push you past your body’s limit, but at a yoga studio they encourage you to listen to your body and rest when you need a break.
You will be addicted. Once you finish that first class, your body and mind will be craving more. You will leave feeling so refreshed, like you can take on anything the world throws at you!
So what do you have to lose? Come try a class and be ready for your life to change!
